One unmissable stop on your trip is a visit to Lowell Observatory – it’s a must-see if you’re looking for cool things to do at night in Flagstaff. This observatory is one the oldest functioning observatories in Arizona and is an absolute wonder to behold.
Whether you’re an astronomy buff or not, then this location has got you covered. Here, you can view the stars and galaxies in action and learn more about them from top-class researchers.
Visiting Lowell Observatory is one of the best things to do in Flagstaff in winter. The research institution is absolutely stunning during winter and lets you see some incredible constellations, like Orion or Perseus.
Track Through Lava River Cave
For something a little bit more wild, make sure you visit the Lava River Cave.
Keep in mind that this isn’t just any old volcano monument; molten rock straight from Hart Prairie flowed through and eventually hardened into the incredible rock formations and tunnels that we see today.
I recommend hiking to the monument. You’ll need to trek through the tunnel for a 2.2-mile round trip that should take around one and a half hours to complete. It’s totally worth it, though.
Top tip: Pack appropriate gear! It is so important to prepare adequately for this trip. That includes close-toed shoes, warm clothing, water bottles and flashlights. The cave is also closed off outside of operating hours, so check ahead.

Don’t let the wonka-esque appearance of these falls fool you; the “Chocolate Falls” is actually a flow of very muddy water. But don’t let that put you off – it really is a wonder to behold.
At a staggering 181 feet tall, this waterfall surpasses Niagara falls in height. Unfortunately, you can only enjoy it at certain times of the year – typically after winter in March and April or during the monsoon season in summer. Plan your trip around this to ensure you get all the benefits.
Top tip: For an extra-special experience, take the 1.1-mile hike to the waters below and then back up to enjoy a picnic at the designated benches and gazebos. Don’t forget to bring your own food and water.

Another one of the best things to do in Flagstaff, Arizona, is to visit the incredible Wupatki National Monument. Situated between the Painted Desert and the Ponderosa highlands, this national park is another testament to ancient history and those who lived before.
This location was once the centre of a bustling agricultural and trading community for the Hopi and Zuni people and showcases evidence of life dating back centuries – at least until the 1100s.
Today, Wupakti offers various activities to choose from. But, the reason I love it so much is because of its many different trails of different difficulties – as well as scenic drives.
But a real treat is the Crack-in-Rock hike – a two-day backpacking, camping and hiking trip through the monument.

If you’ve exhausted your Flagstaff bucket list, you need to hit up Sedona for a jam-packed day trip. It’s around 29 miles from Flagstaff, and the scenic drive is worth it alone.
Keep your eyes peeled while travelling through Oak Creek Canyon along Highway 89A. During your drive, you’ll see incredible views of Mount Humphrey volcano and lush ponderosa pine tree forests.
You could easily spend around three or four hours taking in Sedona‘s fantastic activities and enjoying local restaurants and national monuments like Palatki Heritage Site or Montezuma Castle.
If you’re wanting to chill out, embrace Sedona’s hippy-dippy side with a trip to a spa after visiting one of the city’s many vortexes (Cathedral Rock, AKA the city’s most powerful vortex, should be your first stop).

Speaking of Montezuma Castle, this is another must-see location during your Arizona visit. Situated not too far from Flagstaff, I highly recommend you nip over to it as part of a day trip.
This was the third national monument declared in the United States and showcases incredible ancient cliff dwellings that date back to between the 1100s and 1300s.
These well-preserved dwellings etched into the side of the cliff are well worth your while.; the abodes offer you an excellent opportunity to learn more about the culture and people who lived there.

Now, you’re probably thinking: another set of ruins? Well, yes – but that doesn’t take away from how phenomenal it is to see them. These ancient dwellings are evidence of the lives of the Sinagua people, dating back to the 12th century.
There are two main hiking trails to try out, including the Rim Trail and the Island Trail. As a bonus, the trails are open all year round, including winter, so you will always have an opportunity to visit this national monument.
